Conflict and Progressive Dynamics of the Pamulangan Foundation Yogyakarta

Islamic boarding schools, as the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, continue to transform themselves to keep pace with changing times. This transformation creates various organizational dynamics and governance challenges, particularly in balancing traditional values with the demands of modernization. This study aims to analyze the dynamics and conflicts that arise within the governance of the Pamulangan Yogyakarta Foundation, which oversees a network of 19 Islamic boarding schools. It specifically examines the integration of traditional education systems, formal education development, digital business implementation, and student recruitment patterns. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document studies to obtain a comprehensive understanding of governance dynamics within the foundation. The findings reveal that the observed dynamics emerged from the intersection of traditional Islamic boarding school values and modernization demands. Conflicts were successfully resolved through deliberation, resulting in a synergistic governance pattern in which the Islamic boarding schools maintain the Salafiyah education system, while the foundation facilitates modern management, formal education, and entrepreneurial initiatives. Student recruitment was found to rely primarily on social capital and consistent da'wah rather than solely on media promotion. The study concludes that the integration of tradition and modernity can become a strategic strength for Islamic boarding school governance when supported by a shared vision, balanced leadership, and sound management practices.
